Heterogeneity, State Dependence and Health

چکیده

Heterogeneity, State Dependence and Health We investigate the evolution of health over the life-cycle. We allow for two sources of persistence: unobserved heterogeneity and state dependence. Estimation indicates that there is a large degree of heterogeneity. For half the population, there are modest degrees of state dependence. For the other half of the population, the degree of state dependence is near unity. However, this may be the result of a high frequency of people in our data who never exit healthy states, potentially resulting in a failure to pin down the state dependence parameter for this segment of the population. We conclude that individual characteristics that trace back to early adulthood and before can have far reaching effects on health. JEL Classification: I1, C5

Smoking Persistence in Europe: A Semi-Parametric Panel Data Analysis with Selectivity

We provide new cross-country evidence on smoking persistence in Europe, which can be due to both true state dependence and individual unobserved heterogeneity. We distinguish between the two by using semi-parametric panel data selection methods, applied to both the smoking participation and the cigarette consumption decision. We find that for both smoking decisions true state dependence is gene...

A dynamic model of demand for private health insurance in Ireland

The Irish health care system offers a tax financed, universal entitlement to public care at a nominal user fee, nonetheless 50% of the Irish population purchase private health insurance. This paper empirically models the propensity to insure as a function of individual and household characteristics using panel data analysis and compares three alternate approaches; a static, chamberlain-mundlak ...

The dynamics of welfare participation among women who experienced teenage motherhood in Australia

This study examines whether the factors that determine the welfare participation of women who experienced teenage motherhood differ from the factors that determine the welfare participation of women who had their first child at an older age. We examine these factors across the lifetimes of both groups of women. A dynamic random effects probit model is applied to investigate the extent of state ...

Exploiting the Choice-consumption Mismatch: a New Approach to Disentangle State Dependence and Heterogeneity

This paper offers a new identification strategy for disentangling structural state dependence from unobserved heterogeneity in preferences. Our strategy exploits market environments where there is a choice-consumption mismatch. We first demonstrate the effectiveness of our identification strategy in obtaining unbiased state dependence estimates via Monte Carlo analysis and highlight its superio...

Heterogeneity and State Dependence in Household Car Ownership: A Panel Analysis Using Ordered-Response Probit Models with Error Components

Dynamic, disaggregate choice models which use longitudinal data axe known to have clear advantages over cross-sectional models, but they also have their own unique estimation problems. The correlation among unobserved error components ("heterogeneity") that is likely to exist in such data sets can be the source of apparent state dependence, but true state dependence is also possible. A review o...
